Thinking about end-of-year auto or mid-sized vehicle additions to your fleet? Consider the safety rating of the vehicle. Just as consumers consider safety ratings, businesses considering purchases or leases should consider the safety ratings of vehicles as well. Doing so saves premium dollars especially when employees drive for their employers.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety offers its annual list of “Top Safety Picks” as a good resource to compare vehicle safety.

This year’s picks include many vehicles to choose from as manufacturers increasingly respond to consumer safety demands. Over sixty vehicles are on the list. To “earn Top Safety Pick for 2011 a vehicle must have good ratings in all four Institute tests. In addition, the winning vehicles must offer electronic stability control.”

In December 2007, I wrote a post about business insurance for Santa Claus. I have put up a variation every Christmas Eve since then and I always get some positive feed back.

I won’t take credit for being the first to explore Santa’s business insurance needs, and other writers have explored Santa’s insurance needs. One of the commentators (Nancy) to the original post suggested Santa needed travel insurance, for example.

Writers have covered Santa’s life insurance needs also.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was published in 1843. It is the book that is given credit for renewing interest in celebrating Christmas in England during the 19th century.

The theme of the novella focuses on the problems facing the new industrial era. Growing population. Discrepancies in incomes and education between haves and have-not. Set on Christmas Eve, Scrooge turns away family, friends, and the community until his turn around.

What is interesting in the book is there is a passing topical reference to the United States and its financial condition at the time:

The necktie is one of those classic holiday gifts for dad. Sometimes a running joke or a classic family tradition, but always the iconic “dad gift” for the holidays.

Or, if your like this guy in Washington state, its a tradition that just keeps on giving. Not once, not twice, but three times the 50-year old claimed his prized collection of expensive neckties were stolen.

Reportedly, his first claim came in 2000. When he claimed his collection of 212 ties was stolen from his car. His insurer paid him $16,900. See, ties are expensive, and that’s why they are good holiday gifts!

The holiday season in much of the United States brings up images of a Currier and Ives scene: the winter snowy landscape, sleighs, and the fireplace. “But the fire is so delightful,” as the song goes.

Households and businesses often make use of alternative or supplemental heating sources in the winter. Sometimes this is out of necessity and sometimes nostalgia. But these alternative heat sources are a predominant factor in fire loss and keeping safety in mind while using these heat sources is important as the Insurance Information Institute reminds us.
