Ron Stephens asked:

When I was a 16 year old kid, I got my first auto insurance policy.  That was back in 1970.  At that time, I drove a 1960 Chevy that I had bought from my uncle.

It  was very exciting to have my first car of course and I was thrilled beyond words when I discovered the freedom of coming and going without “adult supervision” for the first time in my life! Soon however, I began to realize that with this incredible freedom came some very new “financial” responsibility.

I didn’t just have a new (used) car to buzz around town in and drive myself to school in, I also had a new found liability and a source of major expense (at least for a 16 year old high school kid with only a part time job).

Fortunately for me, I did not have a car payment because my dad had bought the car for me after working for him all summer in his drywall business. But I did have to buy my own gas and I did have to pay for my own insurance.

Back in 1970 there were not nearly as many choices for car insurance as there are today. Getting a cheap insurance quote was a hassle, (and getting a cheap insurance quote online was not an option of course), so it was easy to just stay with the company my folks used which was probably the most well know company at that time. I ended up staying with them for over 25 years!

But today it’s a different story. The internet has made it possible to get multiple quotes in a matter of minutes in many cases! It is a much more competitive world we live in than it was when I was a kid.
